Nestled in the little hamlet of Texas, New York on the shores of Lake Ontario, Mexico Point Park is one of the most breathtaking natural areas in Oswego County. You’ll find the park located on Mexico Point Drive West, just off New York State Route 104B in the town of Mexico.
There is much to explore at the park. It was once home to the Mexico Point Clubhouse, a popular resort built in 1906. The resort’s carriage house (now known as Casey’s Cottage) has been transformed into an 11th century English manor house and hosts many events throughout the spring, summer and fall.
While you’re here, visit the location of one of the most fascinating local heroes in our nation’s history. Silas Town, an American spy and Mexico resident, was commissioned by General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Here, where the river meets the lake, he overheard the plans of British Colonel Barry St. Leger to attack Fort Stanwix. This led to an American victory in Rome, and ultimately, in the Battle of Saratoga, often referred to as the “Turning Point of the Revolutionary War”.
Mexico Point Park is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Swimmers can enjoy the beach from late June through Labor Day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting. The park features picnic tables, grills, a pavilion, bathrooms, a beach, park benches, trails and wooden sculptures.
So, pack a lunch (not a clue!), and enjoy the day exploring!
