Located at Arnoldsburg Park, home of the WV Molasses Festival. Not
wheelchair accessible, but should be a relatively easy park and
grab. Be sure to check out the interpretive sign on the battle of
Arnoldsburg.
This is a part of the Civil War Trails tour of West Virginia
(there is an interpretive area in nearby Spencer if interested -
near Rebel Cache).
This area of what is now West Virginia was bitterly divided in
loyalty to the USA or to Virginia. The Confederate Mocassin Rangers
recruited well in the area and were successful in raiding supply
lines and antogonizing Union sympathizers. Union troops from
Spencer set up camp here in Arnoldsburg in 1862 and were attacked
by the Mocassin Rangers. Heavy fire was exchanged but there were
only a few casualties.
