Geocache Description:

A well maintained secluded park in the Wagga Wagga suburb of Estella was opened in 1992 in dedication to Riverina blacksmith August Menneke. In the 1870's ,Menneke had won fame, particularly for the goods he manufactured for bullock drivers. So, in turn Menneke Park was named in his honor.

Menneke had the perfect ear for the sound of a bell, and his bells had a clear tenor quality, which could be heard miles away. These bells were used on a leader in a bullock team or other stock so they could be easily located.

A keen Australia wide competition was held on the peak of Mount Kosciusko to find the "best bell maker " in Australia. The competition got down to two fierce rivals in August Menneke from Wagga Wagga and Anthony Morgan of Albury. Menneke won the event when his bell could be heard an incredible 10 miles away from the Apex of Mount Kosciusko.

The Menneke bell is historically significant. It is a rare known surviving example of August Menneke's work and a rare provenanced example of farm manufacture by a blacksmith in the Riverina. The bell has social value as it is locally celebrated and also featured in a poem by Dame Mary Gilmour. An authentic Menneke Bell is on show in the Wagga Wagga Historical Society Museum permanently. The cache is small in size with a new log book log enclosed in a zip-lock bag within the cache. "FTF" HONORS TO..........Fred 6603.
