Geocache Description:

Lake Ann Needs More Caches! Lake Ann, a village in Benzie County, Michigan, was incorporated in 1893. The first settler to Lake Ann was A. P. Wheelock, building a cabin along the shores of the lake. He named the village after his wife, Ann. As with other communities in Benzie County, Lake Ann needed a railroad. The Manistee and North Eastern Railroad was built and passed through Lake Ann. The train left Traverse City in the morning and went to Manistee and returned to Traverse City in the evening. The mail was sorted on the train, and the sorter kicked the mail bag out at any village on the way. When the Manistee and North Eastern Railroad was built, Lake Ann began to grow and commercial ventures were expanding. Elijah Ransom built and ran a grist mill on a creek. William Habbler, an Ohio resident, came to Lake Ann and built a large sawmill. On the Fourth of July 1897, the village of Lake Ann had no special celebrations planned. However a great fireworks display began at 1:30 in the afternoon when a fire broke out at Habbler’s sawmill. Fire broke out throughout the village and 72 of the 88 buildings in the community burned to the ground. With this mill and the stave factory gone, many homes and stores destroyed, a large number of the one thousand residents moved away. Today, Lake Ann, a beautiful resort area, is a quiet place to enjoy the natural beauty of its surroundings. Camping is available at the Lake Ann State Forest Campground situated on the west shore of Lake Ann. The area’s activities include water sports, fishing, hiking, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, are just a few. A visit to the Almira Historical Society Museum is an enlightening view to the past. The museum is open on Tuesday and Saturdays from 1-5 pm during the months of May through October. Lake Ann, a village rich in history and natural beauty, is a great place to visit or to stay forever.
