Geocache Description:

An easy Park and Find.

This cache is located in Pichgut Hollow. Legend has it that this 2.4 mile long road that connects Fairmont with the community of Colfax got it's name because there was a passage so narrow that horses had to have their bellies squeezed in order to get through. Today there is a one lane bridge that spans the bottleneck.

The name "Pichgut" has been a thorn in the side of some of the residents on this road. In 1997 Marion County's Advisory Committee for Conversion of Rural Routes to City-Type Addresses was about to make Pinchgut the "official" name of the road in order to elimintate the Rural Route addresses that the residents of the road had used for years. Some of the residents who thought the name was too "hillbilly" jumped at the chance to change the name to a more serene sounding "Valley River Road". They were also OK with the name "Stoney Road". In 1999 the commitee voted to change the name from Pinchgut to Stoney Road. Before the Marion County Commission could officially adopt the new name a group of Pro-Pinchgut residents brought in a petition to make Pichgut the officail name.

The County Commision decided to settle the battle by polling the property owners. The Pinchgut name won by a 38-19 vote. The County Commision quickly approved the name.

The Pinchgut haters however have not backed down. They claim that the ballots were not sent to the proper homeonwers and that the vote is meaningless. This matter may end up being settled by the courts. Until then though, most everyone uses the name "Pinchgut".

If you are coming North on I79 get off of Exit 136 which opened in August of 2009 and probably isn't included on your GPS. This will save you a couple of miles.
