Andy Griffith was born in Mount Airy, NC in 1926. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1949 with a degree in music although he had first attended school to be a Moravian preacher.
He starred in a number of Broadway plays including his stunning performances in A Face In The Crowd and No Time for Sergeants. He also had an “electrifying” performance in Murder in Coweta County. ?
If you have never heard his rendition of What It Was, Was Football, then you are missing a real treat. You can find it on Youtube, if you’re interested.
Although he never won an Emmy, he did win a People’s Choice Award. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush in 2005.
He still has a warm relationship with Ron Howard to this day.
The character Andy Taylor changed over several episodes. Instead of the overdone country comedian persona, he became the straight man to Barney Fife which created just the right balance for a good show. His accent moved from southern to less so. In my opinion, he’s one of the best straight men in comedy.
Andy always seemed to have the answers and when others were flustered or didn’t know what to do, he came up with the solution. His fatherly advice never seemed to stray from what was right and good. There is a piece of Andy Taylor that appeals to any parent. When Opie accidentally killed a bird in Opie the Birdman, Andy’s only punishment was to open the window so Opie could hear the cries of the birds in the nest calling for their dead mother. When Opie decides to take full responsibility for them, it’s hard not to be proud for Andy.
Park and grab.
