Geocache Description:

Easy cache and dash if you enter from the end of the road, scenic hike if you enter from within the park

This cache is located along old Hancock road within Rocky Gap State Park. In 1758 Govenor Sharpe ordered Captain Evan Shelby to construct a road to improve the movemnt of troops & supplies between Fort Frederick & Fort Cumberland during the French & Indian War 1754-1763.
As the towns of Hancock & Cumberland grew Shelby's road became known as the Hancock Road or the Cumberland Road depending upon the direction being traveled. After 1821 the use of the road declined after the Baltimore Pike was built. In August, 1864 during the Civil War Confederate Troops used this road in an attempt to burn down Cumberland, but were stopped by Union Troops in a skirmish at Folck's Mill, a few miles west of here. The road was used to serve the local farming community until the development of the park.
