Geocache Description:

An easy walk along a good private road with just a short bushwhack at the end. The cache is on the COs' property, so don't worry about trespassing.

The cache is not far from a woods road that is still in active use. Only a little bushwhacking is necessary.

Be careful not to trip over any remnants of the operation. Be on the lookout for random pieces of metal. These are a little farther into the woods than the cache itself, so you can avoid them altogether--or you can explore a little, being an archeologist for a few minutes.

Look around carefully and you will find the remains of a structure that was once an important part of the Williams family's farm. The metal parts are the ones that persist to this day. The wooden parts have long since been recycled by fungi and bacteria and now enrich the soil. One big piece of metal may have been part of a vehicle once a long time ago.

This farm was one of the last to be abandoned on this road. Smaller, rockier hill farms were abandoned as Vermont's sheep boom ended because they were less suitable to the new wave of agriculture--dairy cattle. The Civil War led to accelerated marginal farm abandonment.

What can you find at the cache site that didn't grow here on its own? (Aside from the cache, of course!)

What was it used for?

There is something much rarer now than when the structure was in use...a plant without which it would have been pointless to build this structure. Only a couple of mature ones remain, but there are many young ones. What's the mostly missing plant?

Why and when do you think this species was removed?

Is there anything else present that looks familiar, but out of place?

This cache is on private property--our own. We grant you permission to enter and use the land for the purposes of seeking the cache and contemplating changes in the way Vermonters have used their land.

Congratulations to RSAKVT for FTF honors.
