A traditional cache located on a hill near Nelson with some great views over Tasman Bay.
There are a number of ways of reaching this cache. I plodded up from Marsden Valley in just under 2 hours. I picked my way down the much steeper track down to Brook Valley - the firebreak track that takes you down to the track near the old dam - in just under 1 hour. About the cache - the original cache may have been familiar to a few people. It was retrieved from an archived Captain_S cache near French Pass recently and has now been recycled at this site. The cache was a 1l camo sistema containing log, pencil and swaps. The track up from Marsden Valley spends the first hour through pine plantation but once at the ridge, the next hour is through native forest and bush. Parts of this track are quite eerie as they show lots of signs of the devastation caused by a big storm in 2008. Although shorter and more direct, the track up from Brook Valley is VERY steep in parts. It is also quite gorsey in parts so long pants recommended. You have been warned! Jenkins Hill is 775m high and at GZ my GPS was reading 790m. Sturdy footwear required and do take warm clothing and water. Unfortunately as these tracks pass through waterworks and reservoir land, no dogs are allowed. I hope you enjoy the walk and the scenery along the way. Update - 23/11/2019 - The construction of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary fence seems to have eliminated the original cache here. I have replaced this in a different location. Should be an easier find. The new cache is a camo painted plastic coffee container with log, pencil and room for small swaps. Please replace the cache as you find it so that it does not get too saturated.
