Tipton Canal - Factory Road Bridge & Locks Traditional Cache
matty1984: Having been unable to replace the cache for quite a few months due to vandalism in the area, there is no other suitable hiding place at the moment. I have therefore taken the decision to archive this listing until I have gained permission for a more suitable hide in the vicinity.

A cache situated just off the towpath close to the factory flight of locks.
This is one of a few caches that I have recently adopted along the branches of the BCN canal around Tipton. Due to these branches it is possible to create a loop around Tipton, Dudley Port and the surrounds and I am hoping to place more caches along the canals in the future.
This particular cache is situated close to the Factory Road bridge and more interestingly the Tipton Locks. These locks mark the start of the BCN New Line canal as they branch away from the original main line.
By the 1820s it was considered that the winding and narrow Old Main Line, which only had one towpath, needed reviewing. The result is Telford's New Main Line, constructed between 1825 and 1838 (the year after Telford's death. The construction included the creation of Galton Valley in Smethwick to create a smooth passage from through the area without the need for locks.
The flight of three locks raised the Birmingham level of the canal up to the Wolverhampton level. All three locks were constructed in 1829 and are now listed structures. Originally constructed of bricks and sandstone curbs, they have been partly recontructed with concrete over the years. Also of particular note is the small cantilever footbridge over the lower of the 3 locks.
