Hidden in Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park. Path ways are mostly good but can get muddy in the rain. Easily reachable from Bow Road, or Mile End tube. Or 323, 205, 25 and many other bus routes.
After moving to Bow, Two years ago I discovered the Cemetery Park, and now use it everyday as a short cut to work. I also joined the friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery park.
The Cemetery was created as one of the Magnificent Seven Cemeteries to help ease the overcrowding of the local parish graveyards in the city. It opened in 1841 and finally closed to burials in 1966. But saying that I saw a grave marked 2002 while I was exploring the park. By 1889 it is estimated that almost 250,000 people had been buried in the Cemetery. Most being in unmarked public graves owned by the Company.
The cemetery was taken over by the GLC in 1966, and was transferred to Tower Hamlets Council in 1986, it became a Nature Reserve in May 2000.
Soon after the Friend of Tower Hamlets Cemetery park was formed. The founders were concerned about the neglect by previous owners. Now with almost 200 members the friends have the contract to maintain and keep the park tidy.
The friends rely on volunteers to do most of the work, and have also have an active education program. More information can be obtained from the Soanes centre run by the volunteers.
