The ER nurse shook her head as she looked down at el bandito, who was sprawled out on the gurney with a busted leg sweating bullets. "Mr. Bandito, we just gave you morphine about an hour ago. We cannot give you more right now."

"Tell me," she said as she pointed up to the pattern of faces on the ceiling, "how much pain do you feel, on a scale of 1 to 10?"

El bandito looked up at the ceiling at the faces...

He groaned, and then he said, "I don't know about those goofy cartoons, but I'll tell you this. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'm feeling a $#*!!% 15! Now give me a dadgum shot!"

The nurse looked over at la bandita, who was sitting at bandito's side. Bandita rolled her eyes and mouthed the words "drama queen". Bandita then returned her eyes back down to her book, a non-fiction work about the history, origins, and science of aspirin.

The nurse looked back at el bandito. "Mr. Bandito, that won't do. Before I can treat your pain, I have to assess the severity. Perhaps you can describe what you are feeling?"

"Sure thing, nurse lady," he said. "I thought you'd never ask..."

"First of all, I have this horrible stabbing pain right above my knee. It comes and goes. It almost feels like I'm being stabbed there repeatedly with a dull knife by that crazy wretched Chuckie doll in that movie! You know what I mean?!"

"That sounds pretty bad," said the nurse.

"Tell me about it," said bandito. "But that's just part of it. When the stabbing thing is not happening, I have this red hot pain shooting through my leg. It's agonizing!"

The nurse nodded her head.

"And furthermore, the pain, or the effects of it, seem to be spreading. I now have a pounding headache. And my heart is beating a mile a minute. I'm nauseated as hell. And my fingers and toes are freezing - they are totally numb! I am a mess!"

The nurse nodded again. "Okay, Mr. Bandito, I think we have enough..."

"Just a minute... I'm not finished yet. My ribs are killing me. Every breath I take is torture! I think one or two of them are broken. Also, this road rash is giving me a stinging sharp pain that's really annoying."

"Okay, Mr. Bandito," said the nurse. "Anything else?"

"Naw, I guess that's about it." Bandito managed a smile, " I guess it's safe to say that I'm probably gonna be sore in the morning, huh?"

The nurse nodded. "Thank you, Mr. Bandito. I'll be right back." Feeling a bit frustrated, the nurse left the room and walked down the hall, where she ran into Dr. Kevorkian. "Doctor, that Mr. Bandito down the hall is a strange bird. I am having trouble reading his symptoms. and frankly, I am not sure how to treat his pain. I think we need to get a copy of that McGill Questionnaire..."

While back in the examination room, la bandita set aside her aspirin book and began scribbling stuff on paper. She had a new puzzle idea...
