Geocache Description:

Music history series. Private property, my yard, it's O.K. Can be reached from the sidewalk. Not on but near the small utility box.

Johann Sebastian Bach, lived 1685 to 1750, was one of the greats whose life defined the Baroque period in music history. Bach lived as a servant to monarchy to be able to practice his craft of music. He was born of a line of musicians and carried on the family traditions becoming incredibly prolific as a composer. J.S. Bach, accused by some contemporaries as being too mathematical to be musical, often employed impassioned rhythmic driving and release as one of his compositional techniques.
A story from his youth was told to me in a music history class during my undergraduate music studies. Johann was sent to bed early one evening as punishment for some juvenile infraction. The true punishment though came shortly thereafter when his father (also a musician) played a piece on the harpsichord stopping just before the final cadence (ending). J.S., unable to sleep, waited till the wee small hours of the morning to sneak downstairs to play that final cadence so he could finally …………. go to sleep.
J.S. Bach’s name became synonymous with counterpoint, a style of music that introduces a melody at different times much like a round is sung, i.e. Frere Jacques. He took this concept from two voices (2 part inventions) all the way to five voice fugues, a writing style with unimaginable complexity.
While at Arizona St. University my graduate assistants office was right across the hall from Dan Hearle, a jazz educator hired by A.S.U. to build a fledgling jazz program in the music department. All week long jazz flowed from that office in its many guises. Late Friday afternoons, just before he went home for the weekend, Dan would sit at the piano and play Bach chorales to ground himself before going home to his family.
Over the years, many music students have asked, “Who is your favorite composer?” My answer was usually, “I have so many.” Now, as I look at my music collection, on the basis of the number of recordings owned I have to say, “J.S. Bach.”
A family friendly movie that portrays the life of J.S. Bach is ‘Bach’s Fight for Freedom’, available from Netflix.
