Geocache Description:

You are looking for a pill bottle.

Honor is a village in Benzie County, Michigan and is the home of the State Fish Hatchery and of the National Coho Festival held every August. After he saw the Platte River Valley, an Englishman and industrialist, Joseph A. Gifford, saw a place of great possibilities for opportunity. He founded the town of Honor, which he named for his daughter, Honor. The town prospered for twenty years. Gifford started the Guelph Patent Cask Company which made wooden containers from the timbers in the area. In 1895 two railroads, the Pere Marquette and the Manistee and Northern, reached Honor to transport the timber. With the advent of the railroads, Honor soon was a village with activity at the saw mills and a bustling village economy. The town soon had almost a thousand inhabitants. The town’s success and growth was so spectacular that the county seat was moved there in 1908. However by 1915, the forests in the hills and valleys around the Platte River were just littered with stumps and tinder. Mills closed down and the railroads left Honor, with many workers moving on. Finally, the county seat was moved to Beulah on the shores of Crystal Lake. Today Honor is known for hunting and fishing on the Platte River, as well as canoeing and other recreational activities. Situated at the mouth of the Platte River and a part of the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, the Platte River Campgrounds, located on the pristine shores of Lake Michigan, are enjoyed by outdoors enthusiasts. Another landmark in Honor enjoyed by generations of families, is the Cherry Bowl Drive-In. The Cherry Bowl continues to show double feature family friendly first run films for over fifty years. Another Northern Michigan treasure! Honor, a small village, with a big heart, come and enjoy the many activities and scenic beauty.
