Geocache Description:

Made from adobe, straw, and about 60,000 gallons of paint, Salvation Mountain is one of the most visited attractions in Imperial Valley. Created by Leonard Knight over the course of about 25 years, this giant piece of folk art has been declared a national treasure. The mountain conveys Leonard's simple message that "God is Love". Leonard worked on his mountain daily and lived here in the old truck you see in front of it. However, in December 2011 at age 80, Leonard was no longer able to properly care for himself and the mountain and was moved to a nursing home in El Cajon. On February 10th, 2014 he died at age 82.
Once you've seen the mountain, follow the "yellow brick road" to the cross at the top. From there you can see two old concrete water tanks nearby. These tanks once stored water for the Camp Dunlap military base that was here until the end of WWII. There used to be some interesting artwork on the walls of the tanks, one had various human forms with animal heads engaging in Kama Sutra sex positions, and the other tank had dinosaurs with corporate logos. However now the artworks are almost completely obliterated by graffiti painted over them. Further to the south and barely visible from the mountain top are a couple more old concrete tank that were part of the sewage treatment for the base. These have also been painted with various art and graffiti. Some junk art sculptures can also be found just south of Salvation Mountain at the bottom of the hill. The geocache however is immediately behind the mountain and should be easy to find. It's a camouflaged Altoids tin containing a log only, so bring a pen to sign. There is room to add geocoins, travel bugs, trinkets etc, and this is a good location to drop them as this site has many visitors during the winter. Be sure to cover the cache again after you find it.
