Oakwood was originally called O'Dells Crossing for its main land owner Ulysses S. O'Dell Sr. The name was changed to Oakwood in 1896 because Southern Railway trains on the way from Atlanta to Gainesville would stop to get "oak wood" for their engines. So it seemed reasonable to name the town Oakwood. Just a little town that sits next to the railroad like so many others that are across this great nation of ours.
