"Ohio Spirit Quest"
The
Ohio Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of
historic cemeteries built by Buckeye Pioneers. This series is
inspired by and a continuation of the Indiana Spirit Quest caches
created by Six Dog Team. In just over three years, the SPIRIT QUEST
has grown to over 550 caches, with the hiding teams growing as
well. The Ohio Spirit Quest has grown to over 30 in Ohio, with five
current caching teams, three each with A Man and His Dog, one with
a Couple and Their Dog... and one with A Woman and her
Dog.
Over 1,000 cachers have logged over 20,000
finds. One cache machine found 111 ISQ caches in a single day
(daylight hours only).
Come with us now for a virtual tour
of this burial ground via this page, then go out and find the
cache!

OHIO
SPIRIT QUEST #57
"MY THREE SONS"
This cemetery is known as
Union Chapel Cemetery. Records indicate that another name for this
cemetery is U.B. Gilson Cemetery.
This cemetery is the final resting place for 20
Civil War Veterans.
The Shasteen Family was hurt greatly by the war between the
states.
In 1844, Pleasant Township officiated James Shasteen as the first
Justice of the Peace.
In August of 1861, James' son Peter enlisted as a private in the
Army. He would serve with Company D of the 14th Ohio Volunteer
Infantry. Peter served for two years before being wounded September
19, 1863, at the battle of Chickamauga, in northwest Georgia. He
would die from his wounds about a week later in Nashville,
Tennessee.
Five months after his brother's death, Emanuel Shasteen enlisted in
the Army, to continue what his brother had started. Emanuel was
only 18 when he enlisted, and his service as a Private with Company
C of the 9th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry would last less than four
months. The 9th Cavalry was on duty in Decatur, Alabama when
Emanuel was selected to go on an expedition to Pulaski, Tennessee
on June 1, 1864. He would be killed on the last day of the
expedition, June 12. He died for his country at the tender age of
19.
About six months after losing his second son, in less than a year,
James and his son James Jr. made the decision to enlist in the
Army, and continue their family's fight. The Shasteens both served
with Company B of the 184th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. While serving
with the 184th Infantry, the Shasteens helped with guarding a
railroad bridge over the Tennessee River, and guarding the railroad
between Bridgeport, Alabama, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. They were
both discharged on September 20, 1865.
