Geocache Description:

Harrison's Plantation is fascinating woodland which links Martin's Pond with Raleigh Pond. Covering 4 hectares, this site plays a vital role in providing this part of the city with an important habitat for wildlife.

The woodland is dominated by sycamore, ash, wild cherry and oak. Damper areas support mature crack willows and alders whilst the understorey is a sparse layer of elder, hawthorn with some regenerating cherry. The ground flora includes a number of characteristic plants including dog's mercury, red campion, nettle-leaved bellflower and bramble.

Raleigh Pond, which is thought to be a former claypit, sits towards the eastern end of the woods and supports breeding mallard as well as providing an excellent habitat for frogs and toads.

Site History
It is believed that mixed broad-leaved woodland has been present on this site since the mid 18th century, arising by natural regeneration from a series of 'stew ponds' and Willow Holts associated with the mediaeval fishery at Martin's Pond. Until the early 1900s the wood was connected to Long Plantation, which extended for over 1km from Lambourne Drive to what is now the city ring road. Long Plantation was later cleared to make way for housing.

THERE IS NO PARKING ON THE OLD COACH ROAD.
Parking and the entrance to the area is on Lambourne Drive.
The cache is a small tupperware container with logbook, pencil and room for small trades. This cache can be completed as a cache and dash or if you have time, take a stroll around the plantation. Enjoy!
