Geocache Description:

Between the "Highway" and the former Garsdale Youth Hostel.

This cache is around the middle of the “Highway” which was the original road through Mallerstang before the B6259 was built along the bottom of the dale in the 1820s. The route dates back at least two thousand years, and probably much longer, but it is known as Lady Anne’s Highway because Anne Clifford (Countess of Pembroke) travelled along it when she visited her castles which she restored at Skipton, Pendragon, Appleby, Brough and Brougham. Until recently, it was a byeway, but is now restricted between Cotterdale and Hell Gill because motorbikes were churning up the hillside. Parking is available at both ends, or there is a footpath up past "Shaws" from near "Quarry Farm" on the B6259. Shaws was once the Garsdale Youth Hostel, and, before that, it belonged to R A Scott MacFie of the Liverpool sugar family (do you remember MacFie's treacle?), who died in 1935 and is buried in the graveyard of the derelict Lunds Church which you can visit on the path up from the B6259. From near the cache, you can see a long section of the Settle-Carlisle line, including Aisgill summit, the highest point on the line. The cache is hidden slightly below the Highway in Scars Gill which cuts through the rock forming several waterfalls before it joins the River Ure (eventually flowing out into the North Sea at the Humber Estuary). Access to the cache will be more difficult after very heavy rain, and possibly should be avoided in a severe flood. If you wish to follow the gill down, there is a path on the north side as far as Shaws, and a bridge there, avoiding the interesting but dangerous stream bed.
When first placed, the cache contained: A FTF winner's medal, a finger-monster, a toy harmonica, glitter pens, maze puzzle, yellow bouncy ball, snake, mini-highlighter, party blow-out, and the key to the door (but whose?)
