Geocache Description:

A small cache along the dismantled Coryton- Tongwynlais section of the Cardiff Railway. The terrain is generally easy-going but a basic level of agility is needed to access the cache. The cache is a 500ml Tupperware-style container containing a few small trade items and a log book.

The parking waypoint given below is at Coryton from where a peaceful and leafy 15 min walk along the former trackbed will take you to the cache. Resist the temptation to do an Asda 'cache and dash' as it is worth taking the scenic route from Coryton (especially if you are a railway anorak at 29 like me!). You will still have the cache wrapped up within 45 mins via this route.

If you are a visitor without a car Coryton still has a working station (15-20mins from Cardiff Central or Queen St, 2 trains per hour Mon-Sat daytime) and for obvious reasons the station is fairly handy for the walk.

The Cardiff Railway was opened in 1909 and once ran from Cardiff to Treforest. In 1953 the section between Coryton and Tongwynlais was closed, leaving Coryton station as the terminus. The remaining line survived 'progress' and even Dr. Beeching and an idea to extend the line once more beyond Coryton but now on to Radyr station has been mooted.

Tongwynlais station and part of the disused section have been lost due to construction of the A470 but a pleasant walk remains along the old trackbed beyond Coryton station- this section is now part of the Glamorganshire Canal Nature Reserve and contains 2 impressive bridges over the former line.
