Vickers Maiden Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

krhall: It's been there a little while now, but is getting progressively covered with things you really don't want to delve your hands into and could be dangerous for children, so the time has come to archive this.

Shame.

Geocache Description:

Small Black Cache, not too much bigger than a micro.

Is next to a pavement so access is easy and it shouldn't be too difficult to find. Road can be busy at times.

The cache is a circular screw-top container, somewhere between a micro and a small cache in size and is black in colour.

When the cache was left it contained:

Log Book
Small Pencil
A Shiny Penny
A Shell
A Pack of Red Stars
A Spotty Silk Flower

The cache is to the side of a pavement and so is easily accessible, although it may be a little high for some.

There is a lot of traffic in this area, both vehicle and foot traffic so please be very careful to re-hide.

So why here?

You will see that just north of the existing railway bridge there are some further Railway bridge abutments.

These were part of a bridge which formed part of a rail connection between Vickers main Crayford works and their Thameside works dating from early in the First World War. The main works was connected to the Dartford Loop and this single-track standard gauge line went over Maiden Line, on the abutments, which can still be seen, and ended on the other side of Thames Road where it also latterly served the flourmill and a ply wood factory. It was revived in the Second World War and the track was lifted in the 1950s.

Vickers factory produced many different items including machine guns and later on planes, which were test flown from the marshes.
