Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden in Heritage Park, which sits on Turkey Hill, site of the Battle of Rhode Island.

The battle of Rhode Island took place on August 29, 1778, when units of the Continental Army under the command of John Sullivan attempted to recapture the island of Rhode Island, from British forces. The battle ended inconclusively, but the Continental Army had to give up its goal of capturing the island and securing Narragansett Bay for American and French ship traffic.

The Battle was the largest land battle in New England during the American Revolution. 15000 British, Hessian and Continental troops were involved. Of particular note was the 1st Rhode Island, also know as The Black Regiment. This regiment, made up of freed slaves, Native Americans and Mulattoes, was positioned on the Continental's right flank. They were able to fend off three separate assaults by the highly trained Hessian mercenaries. The area of this portion of the battle is now known as Hessian's Hole, and the small brook was named Bloody Brook, since the popular accounts state the stream ran red with Hessian blood.

This is a very easy cache to get to, replacing a nearby cache was was recently archived. Take you time and enjoy the views. There is an information sign at the coordinates below, which provides additional information on the Battle. After reading it, try to imagine yourself on the same spot, more than 200 years ago. There were no trees, only a few farm houses, and 15,000 men engaged in combat with cannon and muskets. It always gives me goosebumps thinking about it.

The cache is a test tube type container. There is a pencil for now, but be sure to bring your own just in case. Any other container you find, especially one with a wet log book, is not the cache, and you need to keep looking.
