Ever seen a well turned sideways? One is only a short hike away. Depending on time of year some wading may be required. Park open dawn to dusk.
This is another interesting feature in Robert Louis Stevenson State Park which gets overlooked by most visitors. I don't know the history but this appears to be an old mine where a dam was placed to hold back the waters. This creates a sideways or horizontal well.
Horizontal wells are commonly used in bank filtration, where surface water is extracted via recharge through river bed sediments into horizontal wells located underneath or next to a stream. The oldest known wells, Qanats, are hand-dug horizontal shafts extending into the mountains of the old Persian empire in present-day Iran.
As the opening of the well is approached the sounds of water dripping can be heard. Even with a bright flashlight I couldn’t be sure if I could see the end of the tunnel. If you wish to approach the dam inside the opening you may find yourself knee high in orange mud! Look at the mud and see what animal tracks you can identify. Tell us what you find.
Not inside the well. The hint will drop the difficulty to a 1.5.
