2010 Blueberry Season opens July 15!
Robert McCloskey was born September 15, 1914 in a small town in Ohio. But it was after World War II that he and his wife moved to Scott’s Island, in Deer Isle Maine, and he made a name for himself as a children’s author.
McCloskey wrote "Blueberries For Sal" in 1958. He used his wife Peggy and daughter Sal as inspiration for this favorite story. The book opens with Sal's mom canning blueberries for the winter while Sal plays with the canning bands and a spoon. Together they set out to pick more berries on Blueberry Hill. Sal drifts away from her mother as she eats her berries rather than putting them in her pail. Meanwhile a mother bear and her cub climb the backside of the hill gorging themselves on berries for the winter. It is only when the cub helps himself to Sal's mothers bucket full of berries, do they realize that they have crossed paths.
This is a story known by children across the country. It is only one of McCloskey's Caldecott Award winning books. He was the first author to be awarded this honor more than once! Robert McCloskey died on June 30, 2003 in Deer Isle.
Be sure to visit this cache during August & September if you like blueberries. It is located on private property (with permission) at Crabtree's Pick-Your-Own Blueberries. Check their website for hours of business and visit with Colby, the official blueberry greeter dog. There are picnic tables so bring along a lunch and make a day of it.
Although these are high bush blueberries be sure to listen for the "plink, plank, plunk" of berries hitting the bottom of the pails as small children rush between the bushes looking for the biggest, bluest berries.
There waits a copy of the book for the FTF!
