Je-ru-la Pioneers Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Wonder Wits: Fair enough, Ministro, fair enough! It's a great spot for a cache, and as I'm not so active at present, I'll archive to leave the area open for other cachers to make a hide. Just a word of warning - that creek floods pretty high!

Geocache Description:

Located in a park by Gheerulla Creek (see the cache name for pronunciation). Plaques on two rings of stones commemorate the contributions of pioneer farmers, selectors and their families in this district.

On the website maintained by members of the local community there is a small amount of biographical information on all the pioneers named on the stones:
(visit link)

The land for the park was donated by Bert Sims some 40 years before the pioneer memorials were installed – which fortunately occurred before the benefactor passed away.

Down toward the creek is an intriguing area where there is evidence of logging activities. The tree of one Sydney Blue Gum stump (approx. 1.2 metres wide) apparently supplied all the timber for the first Kenilworth School in 1901.

More recently the park has been the focus of revegetation works and habitat rehabilitation, from which many riparian species will benefit, particularly several endangered frog species.

Cache is an ammo tin, initially stocked with loads of goodies, located away from the main park area at the base of a tree – but which tree? PLEASE watch out for the barbed wire fence nearby. (The hint will require further decoding after being decrypted.)
