The original Monkey Bridge cache was hidden by d&c. As they have now moved away from the area, I decided to hide this as a replacement.
The original Monkey Bridge was built to route a water main over the Kennet and Avon Canal and was installed in 1935 by the Corporation of Newbury.
There are a couple of theories on how the bridge got it's name. One theory is that there was once a monkey puzzle tree nearby. The other theory is that there used to be a man living in nearby Russel Road who walked around with a monkey sat on his shoulder.
On the 29th November 2007 a new bridge was installed to replace the original one. It was officially opened by council chairman Andrew Rowles on the 14th April 2008. The new bridge is a good design providing easy access for wheelchairs, cyclists and pedestrians.
Could I please request that you take the utmost care to not be spotted retrieving and replacing the cache as there is usually a high level of muggles here. For this reason, please don't deposit travel bugs/coins here.
