Geocache Description:

The cache is in a 0.33 Litre click-lock box located on level ground at the junction of footpaths on the West Deane Way.

The West Deane Way is a circular 45 mile walk around the Vale of Taunton Deane. It starts and finishes in Taunton and passes through a variety of landscapes from the farmland of the River Tone flood plain before touching the lower slopes of the Quantock Hills with many points of interest en route. The cache may be approached from several different directions but the footpath from Netherclay which starts through the Netherclay Community Woodland is a very pleasant half mile walk on good paths with nice views of the surrounding countryside including the Quantock Hills to the north. The paths may become muddy after rain and there could be an abundance of dog-walkers at some points. At the cache site you are close to the remains of the canal which linked the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal to the east with the Grand Western Canal leading to Tiverton in the west. Up until the mid to late 1990’s, with the wind in the right direction, this area would have had the aroma of cider making from the Taunton Cider Company based in Norton Fitzwarren which is over the metal footbridge just to the north of the cache site. At the height of its business the company employed some 550 employees and as such was a major employer in the area. Sadly this great local employer has been replaced by a new housing estate and an era dating back to the early 19th Century has gone. The West Deane Way footpath continues west from the cache with the potential of a number of pubs close to the route and not far from the cache. There is parking for a few cars at N 51° 01.235 W 003°07.944 at the eastern end of the footpath. Alternatively, there is parking for one or two cars at N 51° 01.005 W 003°09.654 at the western end of the footpath. Please do not block any gates. There is further parking in Bishops Hull or Norton Fitzwarren. The container has a logbook and will take small items, travel bugs and geocoins. I hope you enjoy the walk and the location. Please recover well.
