Geocache Description:

A nice vista overlooking the Nippenose Valley in Central Pennsylvania.

Cache is a small plastic container with a logbook and a pencil. No swag. Hang out and enjoy the view of this "anticlinal" valley. Imagine a time 225 million years ago when the sandstone making up the ridge you are standing on extended upward and inward many thousands of feet above what is now the floor of the valley. Interestingly, there are NO above ground streams draining water out of the valley. The limestone valley floor's karst geology carries the water out subsurface. The outlet of the valley's water is the Antes Spring a few miles North and East of the vista. It is reportedly the largest spring in Pennsylvania. Although you can't see the spring from the road, you can drive along "Antes Creek" which forms from the outflow of this spring as you pass through the Nippenose Gap on PA Route 44 just south of Jersey Shore. This limestone stream flows a few miles from the spring draining the water from the Nippenose Valley into the West Branch Susquehanna
