The Jebel al Akhdar (the Green Mountains) are a place of great
beauty separating the coastal plains of the Batinah from the gravel
plains and desert of the Interior. As the mountains are only
sparsely covered by vegetation they are a geologist's heaven. The
peaks and deep wadis offer great entertainment for 4WD enthusiasts
but there are not many places which are accessible by 'normal'
saloon cars. One exception is the asphalt road leading up the
mountain from the village of al Hamra. The hard-top road ends at
the crest near the Misfat al Abriyyeen rest house, offering
unrivalled views over Wadi Bani Auf to the East, the towering
mountain ranges to the North and South and the plains of Al
Dakhliyah to the west. From this point the road continues as a
gravel track downwards into Wadi Bani Auf offering one of the most
hair-raising descents to be attempted only with a 4WD.

The cache is a regular lock-n-lock plastic container camouflaged
with a beige coloured sock. It is is hidden close to the parking
area at the 'end of the road' near to the highest point; an
anvil-shaped rock formation which can be reached without too much
difficulty by walking up via the eastern side of the bluff. Please
be careful with children as there are some precipitous drops when
you reach the top. Also take care, when searching for the cache, of
scorpions and snakes that love to shelter from the sun under the
rocks. Congratulations to momiel, who was First to Find and who
claimed the bonus unregistered Geocoin. For all others, enjoy the
hunt!
