Geocache Description:

This cache has been sponsored by South Nation Conservation (SNC)

SNC is one of 36 conservation authorities in Ontario. SNC focuses on a variety of conservation practices within the South Nation watershed. see map: (SNC Watershed)

SNC is an environmental organization that works closely with its member municipalities, government, individual landowners and various community groups to maintain and improve the natural resources within its watershed. The Russell Horticultural Society, who maintains this park and managed the construction of this bridge, is an example of one of the community groups working with South Nation.

This cache has been placed to celebrate the opening of a new bridge in Russell's McDougall Park (Opened October 17, 2009). This bridge was built to replace a cedar bridge built at this site decades ago by Dr. Dugald MacDougall, who was one of Russell's first doctors. This new bridge is no ordinary bridge, however. This is a 40 ft long stone bridge over a gentle park swale. What makes it especially rare is that was constructed by the Dry Stone Wall Association of Canada. "Dry" describes the process: rocks are fitted together in a self supporting fashion, so the use of cement is unnecessary. This $50,000 bridge was coordinated and constructed as much as possible by volunteers. It is the first publicly accessible bridge of its kind in Canada.

For more information (and pictures) regarding the construction of the bridge, feel free to visit the following links: (Optional)

The cache is a large micro-sized container hidden at the bridge. Stones placed in the bridge must not and should not be moved to access the cache. The bridge depends on the individual rocks to support itself. This cache can be accessed without touching the stones whatsoever! Bring your own writing utensil.

FTF prize is a coffee at Russell's Hot Cup Cafe.
