I found this spot while taking my oldest son to his Cub scout meeting nearby. While here at GZ, I remembered the Cubs loss to the Florida Marlins in the playoffs six years ago. Steve Bartman was made into a celebrity or villain by baseball fans and media outlets worldwide.
Debate for years carried on whether this cost the Cubs the pennant and ultimately the World Series. The man was made into a scapegoat for the team's failure to win in the playoffs. The ball was auctioned off and publicly destroyed.
Last year, the Cub outfielder told the AP, "You know what the funny thing is? I wouldn't have caught it, anyway."
He later retracted his statement. Hmm....
