Situated on the north wall of the Erie Harbor Channel, the North
Pier Light has guided mariners into the harbor of Presque Isle Bay
since the summer of 1858. This structure replaced the original
wooden pierhead beacon built in 1830 but was swept away by a
sailing vessel in the summer or fall of 1857. The original beacon
was the second of 3 lighthouses established in the area,
Pennsylvania's only port city on the Great Lakes. The light
displayed was a 4th order fixed red light, visible up to 14 miles
on the lake. In place until October 1995, the original glass
Fresnel lens is now on display at the Erie Maritime Museum. Still
an operating navigational aid, the signal displayed today is
flashing red from a modern plastic marine lens. A solar system
powers the light. Maintenance and operation of the light is
responsibility of the U.S. Coast Guard.
