This is a paddle cache. Launch from the Smallwood Museum, stop in and say hi to Ted!
Changed overall difficulty in March 2014. The Smallwood Museum offer boat tours that can include the geocache location. Ask for Corey, 6-generation resident guide can make this find incredible.
Thanks!
As Ted Smallwood looked out to the Ten Thousand Islands he could see Rigg’s Fish House in the far distance. The little house was built on stilts above the waters surface. It is sitting on the edge of the deep water. For years boats would stop at Rigg’s to offload supplies that a smaller boat could bring into Ted’s store.
This spot at the very bottom of Chokoloskee Island is the Southernmost town of the mainland of Western Florida. You will be able to see Ted in his chair as he would have looked in days gone by. There is no other place that embodies Old Florida. The Ten Thousand Islands off the back of the store is owned by the National Park Service, but Rigg’s Remnants has riparian rights to the family of Ted Smallwood. This cache is owned by Lynn McMillin who was born and lived her her whole life. She worked hard to make her grandfathers store a registered historical site.
Today all you can see is the cache hidden in the remnants of the pilings that once held this historic house that supplied this community with essentials.
