Geocache Description:

Newsboy Fountain

This bronze-skinned waif stands proudly as the world's oldest newsboy statue. The statue's base features fountainheads for dogs, cats, horses (lion's head) and people (devil's head).

This anonymous newsboy figure has maintained his vigil in the small park for over 119 years. No one has been able to discover the name of the boy, but his life-like image has captured the imagination and hearts of people the world over. The statue was commissioned by Col. William L. Brown and created by sculptor David Richards and presented to the town in 1895.

Colonel William L. Brown was part-owner of the first New York Daily News (no relation to the tabloid of today) and owned a summer home in the neighborhood. Mr. Brown erected a lasting tribute to his passion and profession - the newspaper industry. More importantly, he chose to honor not himself, but rather a group of people who he determined were an integral part of his success in this profession: The children who sold newspapers on the street.

The statue was restored and replaced in 1995, just months before a devastating tornado toppled trees all around it Memorial Day weekend of that year. But the Newsboy survived, and was honored on his 100th birthday in October, 1995. The statue's base features fountainheads for dogs, cats, horses (lion's head) and people (devil's head).

The cache is a small container and may be winter friendly. Please do not destroy the area while looking for the cache. Use the hint to help out a lot.
