Secwepecic Cemetery
This is one of the earliest cemeteries in Thompson Nicola Valley.
The earliest death recorded in Kamloops was that of Samuel Black a
fur trader the was murdered at the fort in 1841, some believe him
to be buried here. This cemetery dates back to the fur trade period.
The Secwepemc Nation, more commonly known today as the Shuswap
Nation, has a longstanding cultural and historic relationship with
the city of Kamloops; In fact, the name "Kamloops," is the English
translation of the Shuswap word "Tk'emlups," meaning "meeting
place." The First Nations burial sites pay respect to the elders by
a use of wooden crosses and crafted monuments. Many are very
photogenic and the views of the city of Kamloops from here are also
noteworthy. The cache is not in the cemetery but you will have to
pass through. Please enjoy the history here, and walk with respect.
Do not attempt if there is a celebration of life in
progress.
