Blanchard Mountain, the southernmost point of the Chuckanut Range, is the only place along the coast where the Cascades connect to salt water. The Samish Bay Logging Company logged this area in the 1920’s building several railroad lines to haul the logs out. Near Lizard Lake, the loggers built an incline to lower logs from one railroad bed to another railroad line farther down the mountain. This incline became the Alternate Incline Trail accessing Lizard Lake and the Blanchard Mountain trail system. The Alternate Incline Trail has recently been revised to include switchbacks so I suppose you could now call it the Altered Alternate Incline Trail. This approach to Lizard Lake is much shorter than the main Lizard Lake trail shaving off several miles of walking. Along the Alternate Incline Trail, you may notice rusting rails and cables, evidence of those old rail lines. To reach the Alternate Incline Trail trailhead, park at the upper parking lot for the Lizard/Lily Lakes trails and walk up the gated road for approximately one mile. The entrance to the trail is well marked with new signage. The cache is at the entrance to the Altered Alternate Incline Trail.
"Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so."
Douglas Adams
