A strong wind has turned Woodpecker Hotel into a Motel! ;) Just off a well used trail. This cache has been updated and is smaller than the previous one (about the size of a deck of cards.) Too small for a log book, but roomy enough for some very teensy trinkets for kids.
The Pileated Woodpecker has been busy in this tract of forest known as the Ardagh Bluffs. This forest provides the perfect habitat conditions for the largest member of the woodpecker family which prefers old growth white and red pine trees and snags (dead trees). The Pileated Woodpecker is between 40 - 49 cm long (16 – 19 inches) and has a redcrested head and a long pointed bill. This is the woodpecker that Woody Woodpecker was a caricature of. Listen carefully and you might hear the unique “kuk kuk kuk” sound it makes to call a mate, or the resonating drumming sound to ward off competition. This cache is just off a well used trail, so be cautious of muggles. Please put cache back EXACTLY where you find it.
