Geocache Description:

On a good day you can see for miles from this cache, which is located a couple of hundred metres from the wonderful and ancient Wishing Tree.

This spot is one of the Clarkes' favourite places and is visited at least twice each year and especially on New Year's Day. When we first visited the Tree, the old part of it was still alive and standing. However, with very poor fencing and nearby grazing cattle seeking shelter, it was pushed or blown over by gales howling through the pass, in about 2005. We thought that was the end of the Tree but it is obviously made of sterner stuff and its magical powers have made it sprout again and there is now a short but sturdy young Hawthorn growing among the old money-covered boughs.

A short but stiff climb up to the West provides the location for the cache, which was placed to celebrate 1,000 cache finds by theclarkes. The location also gives stunning views over to Seil, the Sound of Lorn and beyond to Mull. There is limited parking at the end of the tarmac road to Degnish from Kilmelfort or it can be approached from the North by parking near Ardmaddy Castle. The Wishing Tree itself is marked on the 1:25,000 map by the side of the track between Ardmaddy Castle and Degnish. Thankfully, the fencing surrounding the Tree has been replaced and will hopefully protect the younger shoots as it matures. Any coins left for wishes should be placed in the old Tree only. And wishes do work! Enjoy.
