Inspiration Park
The people of Abbotsford are proud of Inspiration Park, established in recognition of a determined public effort to ensure a cleaner local airshed. As "inspire" connotes "to breathe," "Inspiration" is an appropriate name for this “green space” in which no pesticides will be used.
In 2006, the City of Abbotsford claimed victory after a six year battle to stop the construction of a Sumas, Washington power plant that would daily emit an average of 2.5 tons of pollutants into one of the most sensitive and confined airsheds in North America. This fight was precedent setting internationally and changed the way decision makers deal with the public. It involved every level of government regardless of party affiliation, and widespread government sector involvement, including education, health, environment and business.
In the end, it was "people power" that stopped Sumas Energy 2 (SE2) from being built. Large numbers of Abbotsford citizens rallied at public demonstrations, wrote letters, signed petitions and mounted signs in homes and store windows. People with little or no scientific background learned how to speak intelligently against the proposal, appearing as official intervenors before the National Energy Board. Stopping SE2 indicated that human wellbeing matters more than corporate profit and that protection of the environment need not undermine the economy.
Inspiration Park, located at the corner of Emerson and Simon Streets, significantly includes 13 mature rhododendron plants from the elegant McKee garden that once graced east Abbotsford. With an arbour and several picnic tables, this location serves as a community gathering place.
