With the Oxbow Public Market and the now defunct Copia as a backdrop, the thirteen acre Oxbow Preserve opened to the public on October 1, 2009. Formerly the site of a sand quarry, unofficial dump, and countless homeless encampments, the parcel was transformed into a park containing native oak woodland, marshland, and swamp habitats.
The park offers paved and gravel walking trails that wander through open meadows and groves of oak and walnut trees. The shoreline provides fishing access and a small sandy beach across the river from the Oxbow Market offers a nice spot to have a picnic, skip rocks, or just watch the water flow by. Wildlife is plentiful with squirrels, arboreal birds, waterfowl, and deer already making their presence known. Eventually, this park will connect to the Napa River Trail making a continuous six mile trail spanning from Kennedy Park to the soon to be constructed park above Trancas Street.
Congrats to zx6lady for the first to find !
