Namnet Arendal slogs fast i samband med områdets
införlivning med Göteborg år 1967, och kommer av
det närliggande Ardalsberget, där betydelsen av
förleden Ar- är omtvistad. De två teorierna
är; namnet Ar av det fornsvenska ordet Arna som betyder
örn eller av mansnamnet Arne. Fram till 1967 förekom
främst stavningen Ardal, men även Arndal, Arnedal och
Ahrendal under 1500- och 1600-talen.

Volvo Museum visar Volvos utveckling från starten 1927 till
2000-talet för de olika verksamhetsgrenarna: Aero, Buss,
Construction Equipment, Penta, Lastvagnar och Personvagnar.
På museet visas många spännande objekt,
förutom de första fordonen: ÖV4, lastbilen LV40 och
bussen LV45, även prototyper och udda detaljer.
Bland prototyperna finns experimentbilar, t ex VESC som
föregick 240-serien, den första elbilen och
konceptlastbilen ECT samt konceptbussen ECB.
Sevärt är Volvo Pentas utveckling av motorer - från
tidiga utombordsmotorer till dagens avancerade Aquamatic med
Duoprop. Volvo Aero visar bl a en stjärnmotor och den
första jetmotorn till svenska flygvapnet.
En utställning visar Volvos miljö- och
säkerhetstänkande. En film om företagets historia
inleder rundvandringen som garanterat ger en spännande
upplevelse - väl värt ett besök.

The name of Arendal was established in connection with the area's
incorporation in Gothenburg in 1967, and origins from the nearby
Ardalsberget, where the meaning of the prefix Ar- is in dispute.
The two theories is; the name is of the old Swedish word "Arna"
that means eagle or the man's name Arne. Until 1967 were the main
spelling Ardal, but also Arndal, Arnedal and Ahrendal during
sixteenth and seventeenth century.

Volvo Museum displays Volvo’s development from the start 1927
to the 21 st century for the different lines of business: Aero,
Bus, Construction Equipment, Penta, Trucks and Cars.
In the museum, there are lots of interesting exhibits, besides the
first vehicles: ÖV4, the truck LV40 and the bus LV45, you will
also find prototypes and many unusual products.
Among the prototypes, there are experimental cars, e.g. the VESC
which preceded the 240 series, the first electric car, and the
concept-truck ECT as weIl as the conceptbus ECB.
Also worthy of attention is Volvo Penta’s development of
engines - from the early outboards to current high-technology
Aquamatic with Duoprop. Among the Volvo Aero exhibits is a radial
engine and the first jet engine used in the Royal Swedish Air
Force.
One section of the exhibition shows Volvo’s safety and
environmental thinking. A film about the company’s history
starts off your exploration of the museum - well worth a
visit.
