Geocache Description:

Because Emporia lacked an "official" travel bug hotel, rest stop, or other centralized exchange location, we asked our new neighbors if we could put one at the edge of their memorable property. It's a beautiful home that we loved to look at whenever we drove through town and we like having an excuse to suggest others see it as well.

This neo-classical home was built between 1915 and 1917 by contractor Henry Kempher for the Albert and Mary Gufler family. Albert was known for his contributions to Emporia such as helping secure pavement for the commercial district and Hwy. 50 through Lyon County, bringing water purification to the area, and holding positions of authority in the Red Cross, Citizens National Bank, the Rotary Club, and the Emporia Chamber of Commerce as its first president.
Then-future president Herbert Hoover was a guest of the family, staying in one of the 8 bedrooms in this 7,453 sq. ft. 3-story. This mansion later became home to the TKE fraternity who added their motto to the fireplace and a kitchen and huge locker-room-style bathroom to the basement.

As for the cache itself, it's a nice spacious 423.5 cubic inch 50-cal ammo can we won at the Topeka Local Area Meet and Eat. Your travel bugs and Geocoins will enjoy a lovely view of both this mansion and its former carriage house and can say they visited where a president slept. More active TBs who roam around after sunset might enjoy the pool, the upstairs ballroom, and the cozy solarium where Mr. Guffler grew his citrus trees, but they should watch out for the current owners' housepet. ;)

You won't even need to disturb a single blade of grass or other living plant during retrieval as the homeowners showed us the perfect thing to retrofit; it's not a mailbox, it can practically be seen on satellite, and it shows up well on Google Street View. In other words, it's a few steps from available curbside parking on the east side of West Street, so please respect the owners' property and privacy.
For the FTF, we've enclosed a way to show off that number-oneness at the next frat-house quarters game; quite befitting one chapter in this location's history.
