Fisherman’s rest on Rattlesnake Island Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

southwindphoto: This Geocache has been muggled and since it is such a popular spot for fishing, I've archived this one, and started a new one about 15 feet away.

The new spot is not used by fisherman, and should be a better spot for Geocaching.

Geocache Description:

This is located in a park belonging to Flagler County, and is not part of the national Matanzas Park.
I used my normal 2-lb coffee container

While any 2-wheel drive vehicle should have no problem getting go this cache, during flood tides and heavy rains the unimproved trails can flood.

This is a popular fishing spot so watch for mugglers, and if one is present please be courteous and come back another time.

From Fort Matanzas website
Why do they call it Rattlesnake Island?
In the early 1900s when dredging work for the Intracoastal Waterway was begun by the United States Corps of Engineers, the name Rattlesnake Island was taken from a nearby fishing camp. Another possibility is that when workers began the restoration work in 1916, they found rattlesnakes among the brush and rubble on the fort.
