[ENG] At the end of the Filozofu street, surrounded by a beautiful
park, we can see a group of buildings. These buildings were built
shortly before the beginning of the 20th Century. Afterwards, new
blocks have been built-up on the South side. These buildings belong
to Jelgava's Mental Hospital. During the more than a century of
existence, this hospital has changed its name many times. In the
mouth of the common people, it is called "Gintermuiza".
. [ENG] There is an ancient street in the city of Jelgava, the
former capital of Kurzeme (Curland) duchy, called Filozofu Street
which leads from the center of town to the country-side of the
river Svete. This place is the former "Philosophers' Road". Along
this road during the 18th Century, Doctors J. Herders and J. Hamans
were always found to be walking during their visits,meditating
philosophical problems. At the end of the street, surrounded by a
beautiful park, we can see a group of buildings. These buildings
were built shortly before the beginning of the 20th Century.
Afterwards, new blocks have been built-up on the South side. These
buildings belong to Jelgava's Mental Hospital. During the more than
a century of existence, this hospital has changed its name many
times. In the mouth of the common people, it is called
"Gintermuiza". In the white two-story building, which previously
was the Doctors residence or "Doctorate", now stands the museum of
the hospitals history. Although the museum was first opened in 1987
the original building was designed and built in 1914 by the
architect Baron U. Hoiningen-Huene. The Jelgava Mental Hospital was
founded by pastor Ludvig Katterfeld. On June 13, 1887, L.
Katterfeld opened the institution "For Week-Minded, Somnambulic and
Stupid". He called the place "Tabor" according to a Bible Episode
where Mt. Tabor is mentioned "...at the foot of this hill Jesus
Christ cured a young boy who suffered from epilepsy." Tabor housed
fifteen beds. In the first day of its opening two patients were
admitted. From the very beginning Tabor House rented the grounds
from the Gintermuiza Estates, and from these same Estates later
came the name of the hospital. On the First of April, 1921, Tabor
House and "Gintermuiza" were united as "Gintermuiza Mental
Hospital". In 1940 when the Russian army occupied Latvia in
Gintermuiza hospital about 500 patients underwent treatment. On
January 8, 1942 In the woods, near the hospital 263 female and 180
male patients were shot to death by the German occupants. [LAT]
