Geocache Description:

This cache is along the South Big Horn/Red Wall Scenic Backway. It’s intended to encourage discovery of the historic trails used by emigrants, sheep and cattle ranchers…and of course, outlaws.

There is no grander sweep of western scenery than this remote area in the heart of Wyoming. This is where most every old-west movie should have been filmed. The Red Wall area is the real deal, where Indians, trappers, cowboys and outlaws made the legends of the west. The Arminto and 33 Mile trails converged in this area to allow cattle and sheepmen to drive their herds each summer to the green mountain meadows of the Big Horns.

The federal government protected the cattle trails from private ownership with the Stock Raising Homestead Act of 1916. Cattle drives still occur and you may have to yield right of way briefly to cowboys and herds alike—makes for good photo opportunities. In the late 1800’s outlaws plied the trails and hid rustled cattle in the great red canyons along the wall. Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid and the rest of the gang enjoyed this remote region. You will too as long as you are prepared for miles of dirt roads that will be treacherous when wet or snow covered.

Visit the “Backcountry Adventure on Wyoming’s Scenic Backways” website for a great guide and travel tips. Four wheel drive, a full tank of gas, plus food and water would be recommended.

The 100 mile scenic loop can most easily be accessed from U.S. 20-26 from Waltman on the west or Bucknum Road on the east. From Waltman follow County 105 north to County 110 (33 Mile Road). Go NE on 110 until you’re nearly on top of the coordinates. From Casper, it’s easiest to take Bucknum Road (County 110) north. Look for a parking area turn-off and a BLM sign. A short walk is necessary. The cache is a medium size green plastic box containing Indians, cowboys and like stuff, placed along an historic switchback road, cut on the Red Wall. Writing instruments are in the cache.

Be sure to set your brakes. A runaway would be disastrous.
