Hidden away in Feilding’s Kowhai Park is a fantastic collection of native birds including Kea, Kaka, Weka, Tui, Kereru, Kakariki and the endangered Whio.
The aviary is bizarrely un-signposted and the individual enclosures remain free of resident labels but there is no mistaking New Zealand’s famous torrent duck, the Whio, or Blue Duck as it is commonly known. Let the sound of the fast running water guide you to their enclosure and enjoy this great opportunity to see the conservationally vulnerable Whio up close.
