Geocache Description:

Go to see some eolian mushrooms and the Romanian version of the Gizeh's Sphinx

This kind of landforms is often seen in the deserts, where the erosion of wind and sand are shaping the stones day by day. But you can find these eolian mushrooms also in the Carpathians Mountains (Bucegi).

The idea of how these landforms are born is pretty simple: a harder layer of rocks, based on looser rock, which offers great resistance to weather- ing, is responsible for the evolution of mushroom-shaped. In years, the looser rock is eroded by rain and wind. The strong layer above remains ‘suspended’

The place is called “Babele” (in translation “old women”) as groups of the mushrooms look like a gathering of old ladies chatting about the weather.

The same erosion process created in nearby vicinity another strange formation called the sphinx because with its resemblance to its’ Egyptian brother from Gizeh.

Because of there nicety, both “Babele” and the “Sphinx” are declared geomorphologic monuments. The area around them is protected, so go for ‘climbing’ or taking parts of the stones as memories – pictures are better.

As a side note: these “stones” are worshiped since the early ages of civilization in this part of the world. Legends among common people are still speaking about war and agricultural gods. Also about something similar to the Peru ’s Pachamama – the early trachian considered them altars which made the spiritual connection between Earth and Sky.
