Vers 764, Fulrad, abbé de la basilique Saint Denis à Paris, attaché à son pays d'origine, crée en Alsace un monastère sous le nom de Andaldovillare. Il y dépose les reliques de Saint Hyppolite, évèque d'Ostie. Celui-ci est mort en martyre au IIIe siècle, attaché à un cheval. Cet épisode sera repris sur les armoiries de la ville représentées ci dessus.
Ne prospérant guère, ce monastère est ravalé au rang de prieuré. Les reliques sont ramenées à Saint Denis. Néanmoins, un petit village se développera, et prendra le nom de St Hippolyte. La première mention sous ce nom remonte à l'année 853.
Si vous passez à proximité de la cache, arrêtez-vous un court instant. Par faible trafic, cet endroit est très agréable.

Around 764, Fulrad, abbot of the Basilica of Saint Denis in Paris, attached to his country of origin, creates a monastery in Alsace under the name of Andaldovillare. He deposited the relics of St. Hippolytus, bishop of Ostia. St Hippolytus was a martyr in the third century, and died tied to a horse. This episode is also included on the arms of the city shown here in the picture.
This monasttery didn't do any thriving, and will be reduced to the rank of a priory. The relics were brought to Saint Denis. However, a small village will grow and take the name of St. Hippolyte. The first mention of that name dates back to 853.
If you're passing near the cache, stop briefly. If there is not too much traffic, this place is very nice.
