It is a good walk up the Kala Strata steps from the harbour
(though you can take the bus to the windmills), then just a short
walk up to the Pontikokastro. There is a climb up some rough
terrain to the final cache location, but you will be rewarded by
fantastic views of the harbour, the windmills, Chorio and Pedi Bay.
Views that you will never forget.
The Pontikokastro is thought to be a prehistoric barrow (burial
ground) and is one of the most ancient monuments on the island.
This is perhaps the grave of Nireus, son of Aglaea and Charopus.
"The king of Syme, he fought for the Greeks during the Trojan War,
taking three ships. He was considered the most handsome of the
Greeks next to Achilleus and killed by Eurypylos."
The windmills are just a few of the original 20 or so that once
provided flour for a population of 30,000 (now around 2500 before
you count visitors).
The cache was placed at the end of the 2009 Symi 'season'. The
herbs were fragrant underfoot and the autumn crocuses were in bloom
in almost every crevice in the rocks.
To reach the cache follow the way-marked path (red paint marks)
up from the windmills, through the Pontikokastro gate and pass to
the left of the stone circle towards the old WW2 gun site. Head up
to the cache from here. The cache is between the 'peak' and the
trig-point underneath a large slab and hidden by small rocks.
Please be careful - there are steep drops and deep crevices!
From the cache there are wonderful views of Yialos harbour,
Harani (the old boatyard), Chorio, Pedi bay, the edge of Nimborio
and the 'Beaufy of Symi' cache that is also well worth a visit!
Please take a photo or two and upload with your log!
Please hide the cache really well after your visit to keep safe
from muggles and goats. Many thanks, and enjoy the
cache!
