Einfuehrung:
Der Waldfriedhof Luckenwalde aus den Jahren 1921/1922 ist ein
vergessenes Fruehwerk des weltberuehmten Architekten Richard Neutra
(*1892 Wien – 1970 Wuppertal).
Er wurde im Auftrag des Luckenwalder Freidenkerverbandes fuer
nicht konfessionell gebundene Menschen angelegt und erhielt
deswegen eine aussergewoehnliche expressionistische Form. Das
Wegesystem und die Bepflanzung orientieren sich an den Umrissen des
im alten Aegypten verehrten Skarabaeus-Kaefers. Er gilt als Symbol
fuer die Wiedergeburt.
Richard Neutra ging spaeter in den USA als Meister der
klassischen Moderne in die Architekturgeschichte ein. Sein Friedhof
in Luckenwalde ist heute leider fast ein Lost Place der
Architekturgeschichte.
Die urspruengliche Form erwandert Ihr Euch am besten, wenn ihr
von der Trauerhalle, Wasserbecken und Vorplatz (Kopf des
Skarabaeus) ausgeht. Der Hauptpfad geradeaus ist das Rueckgrat des
Kaefers. Links und rechts davon seht ihr, in Terrassen im Wald
angelegt, Ruecken und Unterkoerper des Skarabaeus voller
verwilderter Grabsteine. Vom Ende des Hauptpfades koennt Ihr links
oder rechts herum durch vier zickzackfoermige Seitenlichtungen zur
Trauerhalle zurueck kehren. Die Heckenlinien der Lichtungen
stellten die Beine dar.

Introduction:
The wooded cemetery of Luckenwalde from 1921/1922 is an
forgotten early work of later world famous architect Richard Neutra
(*1892 Wien – 1970 Wuppertal).
It was constructed by order of the Luckenwalde Freethinker
Association for non confessional citizens and got therefore a very
special expressionistic design. The ground plan and planting guide
for the entire grounds follow the form of a gigantic Scarab.
Scarabs are regarded as a symbol of resurrection since the early
days of Egypt. Richard Neutra became later in the US a maestro of
classic modern architecture of the last century. His wooded
cemetery in Luckenwalde is today almost a lost place of
architectural history.
The best way to explore the original outline is to start at the
hall with the water-basin and the forecourt (head of the scarab).
The main path straight on is the backbone of the bug. To the left
and right you see, set as terraces in the forest, the back and
lower body of the scarab, full with bewildered tombstones. At the
end of the main path you can walk left or right through zigzag
clearings to return to the chapel. The contours of the legs were
formed by the lines of bushes.

Friedhof, die am Eingang aushaengt. Niemals den Boden umgraben!
Fotoapparat, Taschenlampe und touristisches Interesse sind
nuetzlich. Es gibt relativ wenig Muggels. Die wenigen sind dafuer
aber umso misstrauischer.

find at the entrance. Never dig the ground! Camera, torch and
touristic interest are usful. There are not many muggles, but the
few are suspicious.
